Tenzing Explanation
Thanks for purchasing Tenzing!
IMPORTANT NOTE: There are 2 extra cards in the small wallet supplied with Tenzing. These are 2 regular random blue backed biycle cards. These are not used or needed for any effects, they are only included for packing purposes and may discarded once the gimmick is set up.
Introduction by Simon Jacobs
HOW, Tenzing came about I had the idea around 3 years ago to use a gimmick to hide a chosen card within a deck. As a worker I set myself some rules: The rest of the deck had to be regular and used for other routines before and after the effect.- The gimmick had to be easy to ring in and out
- The reset had to be swift and able to be done on the fly
- It had to be easy to switch between decks
The original gimmick was very basic and made with cards i had left in the house, which happened to be blank backed. After I made the gimmick I put into a card box for safe keeping, came back to look for it a few days later and found it had vanished. After looking closer i realized that the gimmick was still in the box but I'd missed it because it blended with the colour inside and the signed card I'd been practicing with was still under the gimmick. This gave me idea of being able to use the gimmick to carry away the chosen card and Tenzing was born. I showed the idea to Magicbox and three years later, numerous incarnations of the gimmick and many late night discussions you have the final Tenzing. Thank you for buying this product and I hope you enjoy it.
WHY: So why is it called Tenzing? In 1953 Edmund Hillary climbed Mount Everest, but he was not alone. Carrying a lot of the heavy equipment was a sherpa - a member of a Himalayan people living on the borders of Nepal and Tibet, renowned for their skill in mountaineering - named Tenzing Norgay. Although they reached the summit at the same time, Hillary is mainly credited with the glory (though I must point out that Hillary always said they reached the top of Everest together). The Tenzing principal is much the same. The gimmick is going to carry the chosen card and you will take the glory for it's work. This was named in Tenzing Norgay's honour.
WHO: And now a few thank yous. Firstly thank you to Michael Murray and Kris Rubens for all their hard work on making my gimmick look and work beautifully. To the production team at Magicbox for their belief in the project and being a fantastic team to work with. Finally to my ever patient partner Stacey who tirelessly chose cards and watched the same routines hundreds of times without (much) complaining.
CREDITS: The Braue Reversal - This is used in "Kickback" to reverse the cards in the center of the deck. It was created by Frederick Braue and first published in Royal Road to Card Magic, page 179 as Reverse, fourth method (1948) Kris Rubens for making every gimmick lovingly by hand.
